How to join
Who can join?
Anyone who enjoys swimming and is reasonably comfortable with the basics! You don’t have to be a good swimmer to join: we’ll make you a better one and you’ll have fun in the process. (That’s the whole point.) If you are able to swim at least 25 metres front crawl, breaststroke and backstroke, we’d love to meet you. In terms of the Learn to Swim stages, most children join when they have completed Stage 6 but some are ready slightly before then.
We welcome disabled and neurodivergent swimmers. Our coaches or a committee member will take the time to talk to you and your child to find out the best way of enabling you/ your child to get the most out of each session. This can be an ongoing process: we understand it might take time for your child to settle in and that what they require is likely to change as they get older and/or gain confidence and experience.
Masters swimmers: as long as you are over the age of 18 years and can swim 100m front crawl continuously, there is space for you. Swim for fun and fitness, or work towards being a competitive swimmer: there is expertise within the club, from short distance swimming to triathlon, and a friendly environment to help you reach your goals or simply enjoy the process. We make time for all levels of swimmer: we won’t mind if you get out early, or have to shorten some sets, or need extra time. At the other end of the scale, we have members who compete internationally.
Get in touch with us on tavistockswimmingclub@gmail.com or via this form. We will be happy to answer your questions and to invite you along for a no-obligation free taster session.
Equipment
The only equipment you need to start is:
- a swimming costume
- goggles
- a towel
- a drinks bottle
Masters swimmers: there is less equipment available to borrow at Mt Kelly, so you are ultimately likely to want (in order of priority):
- fins
- a kick board
- a pull buoy
- (optional) paddles
But if you don’t have any of that, don’t worry! Come along anyway. We’ll be able to lend you anything which is essential.
Fees
Fees start at £29/ month for one x 1hr session per week, plus a £30 joining fee. They are set out in full here. The club’s bank account details are Tavistock Swimming Club; 089299 (Co-op); account number 67264478.
We can offer FREE places to a small number of swimmers whose parents are in receipt of means-tested benefits: please contact us to discuss.
